The PHA was set up in 2009 to provide a new and better focus on public health and wellbeing in Northern Ireland by bringing together a wide range of public health functions in one organisation. It is a multi-disciplinary, multi-professional body with a strong regional and local presence. Its four key functions are:
• Health and social wellbeing improvement
• Health protection
• Public health support to commissioning and policy development
• HSC research and development
In addition, the PHA is required to create better working between sectors, including enhanced partnership arrangements with local government; to tackle the underlying causes of poor health; and to reduce health inequalities.
